To connect a PS5 controller to a PC, hold the Create button and the PS button together until the light bar blinks, then pair it from your PC’s Bluetooth settings. For haptic feedback and adaptive triggers, use a USB-C cable instead — Sony confirms those features require a wired connection on PC.

Both methods take under a minute. The part worth understanding is what you give up on Bluetooth, because the DualSense’s headline features are exactly the ones that stop working wirelessly on a PC.

Connect a PS5 controller to PC over Bluetooth

These are Sony’s own steps, in order:

    1. Disconnect the USB cable. If a cable is attached, pairing mode will not engage.
    2. Make sure the player indicator is off. If it is lit, press and hold the PS button until it turns off.
    3. Enter pairing mode. While pressing and holding the Create button (top-left, next to the D-pad), press and hold the PS button until the light bar blinks.
    4. Pair from the PC. Open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Add device → Bluetooth, then select Wireless Controller from the list.

The light bar stops blinking and settles to a solid colour once pairing succeeds.

One detail that causes a lot of confusion: Sony states that “each time you change devices, you must pair the controller with the new device.” The DualSense does not hold multiple pairings the way a mouse with profile buttons does. Move it back to your PS5 and you will need to re-pair it with the PC afterwards.

    Which button is Create?

It is the small button to the upper-left of the touchpad, where the Share button sat on the DualShock 4. It is not the Options button on the right. Holding the wrong one is the single most common reason pairing fails.

    Connect by USB cable

Plug a USB-C to USB-A (or USB-C to USB-C) data cable into the controller and the PC. Windows recognises it immediately with no driver install and no pairing step.

Use a cable you know carries data. Many charge-only USB-C cables — particularly the ones bundled with phone chargers and power banks — will power the controller and light it up while transmitting nothing. The controller appearing to charge is not evidence that the cable works for input.

What works on PC, and what does not

Feature USB on PC Bluetooth on PC Mac
Buttons, sticks, D-pad Yes Yes Yes
Motion controls / gyro Yes Yes Yes
    Haptic feedback Yes No No
    Adaptive triggers Yes No No
Built-in microphone Windows only, game-dependent Windows only, game-dependent No
Built-in speaker Windows only, game-dependent Windows only, game-dependent No

Sony is explicit on the two that matter: haptic feedback “requires a USB connection on PC” and “isn’t compatible with Mac computers and mobile devices.” Adaptive triggers carry the same limitation.

This is the trade-off in one line: Bluetooth for convenience, USB for the features you bought a DualSense for. If you are playing a game with meaningful trigger resistance, plug in.

The microphone and speaker are listed as working only on Windows PCs, and only where the game supports them — which in practice is a short list. Do not plan your voice chat setup around it.

    Which games actually support it

Sony frames PC compatibility around two categories: games “streamed from your PS5 console or PlayStation 4 console to your supported device using the PS Remote Play app,” and “games that support generic controllers.”

In practice this splits into three tiers:

    • Native DualSense support — correct PlayStation button prompts, and haptics or adaptive triggers over USB. Common in PlayStation ports on PC.
    • Generic controller support — the controller works, but the game shows Xbox button prompts. Functional, mildly annoying.
    • XInput-only games — the controller is not detected at all. Steam’s built-in PlayStation controller support resolves most of these by translating input; enable it under Steam Settings → Controller.

If a non-Steam game refuses to see the controller, that is an XInput problem rather than a pairing problem, and re-pairing will not fix it.

    Troubleshooting

    Symptom Cause and fix
Light bar never blinks You are holding Options, not Create. Or a USB cable is still attached — disconnect it.
Blinks, but PC does not list it The player indicator was on. Hold PS until it goes out, then retry from step 3.
Pairs, then disconnects seconds later Remove the stale “Wireless Controller” entry from Bluetooth devices and pair fresh.
Works wired, dead over Bluetooth Your PC’s Bluetooth adapter is likely 4.0 or older, or the driver is generic. A £10 USB Bluetooth 5.0 dongle fixes it.
Game shows Xbox buttons Expected on generic-controller games. Steam’s PlayStation Configuration Support corrects the prompts in most titles.
Two controllers register as one player Close Steam Input for one of them, or pair them one at a time rather than simultaneously.

    Battery life on PC

Battery life is the DualSense‘s weak point, and the reason is structural: the haptic actuators and the light bar draw power continuously. On PC over Bluetooth, with haptics unavailable anyway, you should see noticeably longer runtime than the same controller gets on a PS5 — the features that drain it are the ones Bluetooth disables.

Windows does not surface DualSense battery level natively. Steam shows it in the controller settings panel when Steam Input is active, which is the simplest way to check without third-party software.

    Frequently asked questions

    Can I connect a PS5 controller to a laptop?

Yes, and the steps are identical to a desktop — most laptops have Bluetooth built in, so you can skip buying an adapter. Hold Create and PS until the light bar blinks, then add the device from Bluetooth settings. A USB-C cable also works and enables haptics and adaptive triggers, which Bluetooth does not.

Do I need to install any drivers?

No. Windows 10 and Windows 11 recognise the DualSense as a standard HID game controller over both USB and Bluetooth with no driver installation. Third-party tools like DS4Windows are only needed to force XInput emulation for older games that ignore non-Xbox controllers entirely.

Why do the adaptive triggers not work on my PC?

Because you are connected over Bluetooth. Sony confirms haptic feedback requires a USB connection on PC, and adaptive triggers share that limitation. Connect the controller with a USB-C data cable instead. Even wired, the game itself must explicitly support the feature — most PC titles do not.

    Can I use a PS5 controller on a Mac?

Yes, over both Bluetooth and USB, for standard buttons, sticks and motion controls. However, Sony states that haptic feedback “isn’t compatible with Mac computers and mobile devices,” and the built-in microphone and speaker do not work on macOS either. Basic gameplay is fine; the DualSense’s distinguishing features are not.

Will pairing to my PC unpair the controller from my PS5?

Effectively, yes. Sony states that each time you change devices you must pair the controller with the new device. Returning to the PS5 means reconnecting there — easiest with a USB cable and a press of the PS button — and then re-pairing with the PC when you switch back.

    The bottom line

Bluetooth pairing is Create + PS until the light bar blinks, then add the device in Windows. That is the whole procedure. Keep a USB-C data cable within reach for anything where haptics or adaptive triggers matter, and remember that the controller holds one pairing at a time — the swap back to your console is part of the routine, not a fault.
