Wi-Fi Not Showing Up in Windows 11: Every Fix, In Order

If your Wi-Fi network is missing from the list in Windows 11, the cause is almost always one of four things: a hardware or software radio switch that is off, a band mismatch between your adapter and your router, a driver that has stopped enumerating networks, or a corrupted network stack. Those four cover the overwhelming majority of cases, and they are worth working through in that order because each one takes less effort than the one after it.

The distinction that matters first: no networks at all is a different fault from every network except mine. The first points at the radio or the driver on your PC. The second points at the band or the broadcast settings on your router. Microsoft’s own Fix Wi-Fi connection issues in Windows guidance splits along the same line, and this article follows that order with the exact menu paths and commands.

First: which symptom do you actually have?

What you see Most likely cause Start at
No Wi-Fi icon in the taskbar at all Adapter disabled or driver missing Device Manager
Icon present, network list completely empty Airplane mode, hardware switch, or radio off Radio checks
Other networks appear, yours does not Band mismatch or hidden network name Band settings
Network appears, then vanishes Adapter power management or driver instability Power Management tab

Take thirty seconds to place yourself in that table before touching anything. Running a network reset because one network name is missing is a very large fix for a very small problem, and it costs you every saved Wi-Fi password on the machine.

Check the radios: Airplane mode and the hardware switch

Microsoft puts this first for a reason. It is the most common cause of a completely empty network list.

    1. Open Settings > Network & internet > Airplane mode and confirm it is Off.
    2. Still in Settings > Network & internet, confirm the Wi-Fi toggle itself is On. Turning Airplane mode off does not always turn the Wi-Fi radio back on.
    3. Look for a physical switch or an Fn key combination on a laptop. Plenty of business laptops still carry one, and it overrides everything in software.

Microsoft explicitly lists a physical Wi-Fi switch being off, and Wi-Fi being disabled in settings, among the reasons no networks appear in the available list. If you have a Wi-Fi icon with nothing beneath it, spend your first minute here and nowhere else.

Band mismatch: why one specific network is missing

This is the case people misdiagnose most often. Modern routers broadcast on 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz and increasingly 6 GHz. An adapter cannot see a band it does not support. The network is broadcasting perfectly and your PC is simply deaf to it. There is no error message for this.

    Two checks:

    • On the router: if the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks share a single name, split them temporarily so you can see which band the PC actually finds. A 6 GHz network is invisible to every adapter older than Wi-Fi 6E.
    • On the PC: open Device Manager, expand Network adapters, right-click your wireless adapter, choose Properties, then the Advanced tab. Find Wireless Mode or the Band setting and confirm it is not pinned to one band. Microsoft names this exact check: the adapter’s driver can filter out the frequency your router is using.

A hidden network name behaves identically. If the router is set not to broadcast, the network will never appear no matter what you change on the PC. You have to add it by hand via Manage known networks > Add network, entering the name and security type yourself.

    Forget the network and reconnect

If the network appears but will not connect, or connects and immediately drops, clear the stored profile:

    1. Go to Settings > Network & internet > Wi-Fi.
    2. Select Manage known networks.
    3. Choose the network and select Forget.
    4. Reconnect and enter the password again.

This rewrites a stored profile that may still be holding an old security type or a stale key, common after a router firmware update moves the network from WPA2 to WPA3.

The five commands that rebuild the network stack

When the adapter is healthy but Windows networking is not, Microsoft publishes a specific sequence. Open Command Prompt as administrator and run these in order:

    netsh winsock reset
    netsh int ip reset
    ipconfig /release
    ipconfig /renew
    ipconfig /flushdns

What each one does, because running commands you do not understand is how working machines get broken:

    Command Effect
netsh winsock reset Resets the Winsock catalog, the layer VPN and security software hooks into
netsh int ip reset Rewrites the TCP/IP stack registry keys back to their defaults
ipconfig /release Gives up the current DHCP lease
ipconfig /renew Requests a fresh lease from the router
ipconfig /flushdns Clears the local DNS resolver cache

Restart the PC afterwards. The Winsock and TCP/IP resets do not fully take effect until you do, which is why people report that they “did not work”.

    Reinstall the wireless driver

A driver that has half-failed will show the adapter as present while never returning a scan result. Microsoft’s fix is deliberately blunt. Remove it and let Windows put a clean copy back:

    1. Open Device Manager and expand Network adapters.
    2. Right-click the wireless adapter and select Uninstall device.
    3. Tick Attempt to remove the driver for this device.
    4. Restart. Windows reinstalls a generic driver automatically on boot.

Then check Start > Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates, which is where Microsoft ships vendor wireless drivers. If the generic driver connects but performs badly, take the current driver from your laptop manufacturer’s own support page, not from a driver-updater utility.

Stop Windows powering the adapter down

If Wi-Fi disappears after sleep or after a spell of idling, this setting is the culprit. In Device Manager, open the adapter’s Properties, go to the Power Management tab, and clear Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power. On a desktop there is no reason to leave it ticked at all.

Network reset: genuinely the last step

Only once everything above has failed. Go to Start > Settings > Network & internet > Advanced network settings > Network reset, then select Reset now > Yes.

Read Microsoft’s warning before you click: network reset “removes any network adapters you have installed and the settings for them”. In practice every saved Wi-Fi password is gone, and VPN clients and virtual-machine networking components usually need reinstalling afterwards. The PC restarts. Budget twenty minutes to put things back.

Prove it is the PC before you conclude it is the PC

Two tests separate a machine fault from a network fault:

    • Try another device. If a phone also cannot see the network, the router is the problem and nothing you do in Windows will help.
    • Ping the gateway. Run ipconfig, note the Default Gateway address, then ping it. A reply means your PC reached the router and the fault is upstream; no reply means the local link is broken.

And restart the modem and router properly: unplug both, wait at least 30 seconds, power the modem first and let its lights settle before powering the router. Doing them simultaneously is why “I already restarted it” so often changes nothing.

    Frequently asked questions

Why can my phone see the Wi-Fi network but my Windows 11 laptop cannot?

Almost always a band mismatch. Recent phones support 5 GHz and often 6 GHz, while an older laptop adapter may be 2.4 GHz only, or its driver may be restricted to a single band in the Advanced tab in Device Manager. Check the Wireless Mode or Band setting on the adapter before assuming the laptop is faulty.

Does Network reset delete my saved Wi-Fi passwords?

Yes. Microsoft states that network reset removes the network adapters you have installed and the settings for them, which includes every stored wireless profile and its password. You will usually also need to reinstall VPN client software and virtual machine networking components afterwards.

Is it safe to run netsh winsock reset?

Yes. It is one of the commands Microsoft itself publishes for Wi-Fi troubleshooting. It resets the Winsock catalog to defaults, which can dislodge hooks placed there by VPN or security software, so expect to reconfigure any VPN client you use. Restart the PC afterwards for the change to take effect.

Why does Wi-Fi only disappear after the laptop sleeps?

That is the adapter’s power management setting. In Device Manager, open the wireless adapter’s Properties, go to the Power Management tab, and clear the option that lets the computer turn the device off to save power. It is the single most common cause of Wi-Fi that works until the lid closes.

Can a Windows update cause Wi-Fi to stop working?

It can, usually by replacing a working vendor driver with a generic one. The fix is the same either way: uninstall the adapter in Device Manager with the remove-driver box ticked, restart, then install the current driver from your laptop manufacturer’s support site rather than from a third-party updater.

    The bottom line

Work in order of cost. Radios and Airplane mode first, band mismatch second, forget-and-reconnect plus the driver reinstall third, the netsh sequence fourth, and network reset only when nothing else has moved the problem. Most missing-network faults resolve inside the first two steps. The people who lose an afternoon are the ones who started at step five.

More Windows 11 work on Tech2Post: fixing and customizing the taskbar, changing the administrator account, using the Installation Assistant to get onto a current build, and installing RSAT on Windows 11 if you administer servers from the same machine. Accidental accessibility toggles are covered in turning off Sticky Keys.

If the machine is also used for gaming, connection quality matters differently: see what latency actually means, optimizing a gaming PC, and what counts as a good connection speed on a console. For peripherals on the same PC, see pairing AirPods with a laptop and connecting a PS5 controller. Screenshot workflows are in screenshots on a Chromebook.
