Social Media Marketing for Business: What Actually Works in 2026

Most advice about social media marketing for business is written by people selling social media marketing. That is worth keeping in mind, because it explains why so much of it promises reach, engagement and “taking your business to the next level” without ever saying what those things are worth.

This guide takes the opposite approach. It covers what social media genuinely does for a business, what it does not do despite being sold as though it does, which metrics are worth tracking, and how to decide between running it in-house and hiring help.

Start with what Harvard actually found

An earlier version of this article opened with a statistic attributed to Harvard Business Review — that around 12% of organisations using social media marketing were seeing genuine profit and return on investment. That figure could not be traced to any published study, so it has been removed rather than repeated.

What Harvard Business School faculty have actually said on the record is considerably more sceptical. Professor Sunil Gupta, discussing years of research into social media marketing, put it bluntly: “What we found with our research was that likes lead to nothing.” The same discussion drew a sharp distinction between passive engagement and genuine endorsement — seeing a friend actually book a hotel carries weight, whereas seeing them tap a like button does not.

It is worth being precise about the status of that claim: it comes from HBS Working Knowledge as expert commentary from faculty, not a single study with published methodology. But it points at something most practitioners eventually learn the expensive way — engagement metrics and business outcomes are only loosely related, and optimising for the first does not reliably produce the second.

That is the correct starting point. Social media is genuinely valuable. It is just rarely valuable in the way the follower count suggests.

The three things social media actually does

Strip away the vanity metrics and social media does three jobs well for most businesses:

    • It builds familiarity before the buying decision. People who already recognise your name convert better when they eventually search for what you sell. The value is realised later, somewhere else, which is exactly why it is hard to attribute.
    • It is a distribution channel for content you already made. A guide, a comparison, a case study — social is how it reaches people who were not searching for it yet.
    • It is the fastest customer research available. The questions in your replies and comments are the questions your buyers are actually asking, in their own words. That is directly usable in keyword research and in the pages you write next.

What social media does not reliably do is capture existing demand. Someone who has decided to buy usually goes to a search engine, a marketplace, or increasingly an AI assistant. That is a different job, handled by a different channel — the distinction is covered properly in SEO vs SEM.

Choosing platforms: adoption stats are the wrong input

Marketer-adoption figures are widely quoted and largely useless for this decision. In a 2026 survey of marketers worldwide reported by Statista, roughly 86% used Facebook, 82% Instagram and 72% LinkedIn. That tells you what marketers do. It tells you nothing about where your customers are.

These are also self-reported survey numbers rather than measured platform data, which is worth remembering before quoting them as though they were audited.

A more useful way to choose:

    • Sell to businesses? LinkedIn, plus whichever niche community your buyers actually inhabit.
    • Sell physical products? Instagram and TikTok, where the product can be shown rather than described.
    • Sell locally? Facebook still dominates local groups and community discovery in most markets.
    • Sell something visual or aspirational? Pinterest and Instagram, where saved intent has a long tail.

Two platforms done properly beat five done badly. This is the single most common mistake small teams make, and it is entirely self-inflicted — a genuinely active presence on two channels outperforms a stale profile on every channel.

If you are choosing where to invest effort, short-form video is where marketer investment is concentrating in 2026, with TikTok the platform most commonly named for increased use. Video is expensive to produce well, which is precisely why a business that commits to it can still stand out.

How social visibility now feeds search and AI answers

This connection is new enough that most social media advice has not caught up with it, and it changes the calculation.

Social activity does not directly raise your rankings — social links are generally nofollowed and are not treated as endorsements the way editorial links are. Its influence is indirect, and it runs through three routes:

    • Branded search volume. People who encounter you on social later search for you by name. Branded searches are among the strongest signals that a brand is real and in demand.
    • Discovery by people who do link. Journalists, bloggers and creators find things on social and cite them elsewhere. That is where the durable link equity comes from, which is why social sits alongside the off-page techniques that do move rankings.
    • Corroboration for AI systems. Generative assistants favour claims that are consistent across multiple independent sources. A brand discussed in several places is easier for such a system to treat as reliable than one that exists only on its own website.

That last point matters more each quarter. When someone asks an assistant for a recommendation rather than typing a query into a search box, the question becomes whether your business is mentioned in enough credible places to be surfaced at all. The mechanism is explained in how to rank in ChatGPT AI search, and the broader shift in generative AI and SEO.

What to measure instead of engagement

If likes lead to nothing, the reporting most agencies produce measures nothing. Replace it with metrics that connect to the business:

    Stop reporting Report instead Why
Follower count Branded search volume Measures whether people remember you
Likes and reactions Saves, shares, DMs Signals intent, not reflex
Impressions Referral sessions and their behaviour Shows whether attention became attention on your site
Engagement rate Assisted conversions Credits social for its real role — early influence
Post frequency Cost per qualified enquiry The only number a business owner needs

Expect attribution to stay imperfect. Social media influences decisions that complete elsewhere, often weeks later, frequently on another device. A channel that shows a poor last-click return can still be the reason the sale happened. Judge it on assisted conversions and branded search trends, not last-click.

    What to actually post

The failure mode for business accounts is not posting too little. It is posting things nobody would choose to read.

    • Answer the questions you get asked. Every repeated customer question is a post, and usually an article too.
    • Show the work. Process, before-and-after, and things that went wrong outperform polished promotion consistently.
    • Write for the platform. The same link auto-posted everywhere performs badly everywhere. Native formatting is not a stylistic preference — every platform demotes content that pushes people off it.
    • Keep profiles current. The bio is the conversion point for anyone who checks you out after a good post; there are practical patterns in Instagram bio ideas.
    • Reuse deliberately. One substantial article should yield weeks of posts. Keeping source files organised through proper digital asset management is what makes that sustainable rather than exhausting.

AI tools have made production faster, and it shows — undifferentiated AI-written posts are now abundant and ignored. Used well the leverage is real, and the honest comparison of what these tools do and cost is in 21 best artificial intelligence tools and the best AI SEO tools.

    In-house or agency?

Agencies make sense when you need production capacity or paid-media expertise you do not have. They make poor sense when you need someone who understands your customers, because that knowledge sits inside your business.

If you do hire, these questions separate the competent from the plausible:

    1. What will you report, and how does it connect to revenue? If the answer is impressions and engagement rate, keep looking.
    2. Which platforms do you recommend, and which do you recommend against? “All of them” means they have not thought about your business.
    3. Who writes the content, and who approves it? Content is the whole job. Find out whether it is a specialist or an intern.
    4. Show a client whose results disappointed you. Everyone has one. Only honest agencies will discuss it.
    5. What happens to the accounts and content if we leave? Settle ownership before you start, not after.

Budget realistically. Survey data from The Manifest puts most small-business social spending between roughly $500 and $5,000 per month, with about a quarter spending under $500. Below that floor you are usually buying scheduling, not strategy.

Five mistakes that waste the budget

    • Treating every platform as one channel. Cross-posting identical content is why most business accounts underperform.
    • Optimising for the metric on the dashboard. Engagement is easy to inflate and easy to mistake for progress.
    • Going quiet for months, then posting daily for a fortnight. Consistency beats volume on every platform.
    • Buying followers. It depresses your engagement rate, corrupts your audience data, and fools nobody who checks.
    • Never linking social to the rest of the funnel. If social traffic lands on a slow or broken site, the spend is wasted — worth a technical SEO check before scaling. For online stores, the platform itself sets limits on what you can fix, as covered in the best ecommerce platforms for SEO.

    Frequently asked questions

Does social media marketing actually increase sales?

Indirectly and over time, for most businesses. It builds familiarity that improves conversion when someone later searches for what you sell, and it distributes content that earns links and mentions. It rarely captures existing purchase intent, which usually goes to search engines, marketplaces or AI assistants instead.

Do social media signals improve Google rankings?

Not directly. Links from social platforms are generally nofollowed and are not treated as editorial endorsements. The influence is indirect — through branded search volume, through discovery by people who do publish links, and through the multi-source corroboration that AI answer engines rely on.

How many social platforms should a small business use?

Usually two, chosen by where your customers already are rather than by marketer adoption statistics. An active presence on two channels consistently outperforms a neglected presence on five.

What should I measure if not likes and followers?

Branded search volume, saves and shares, direct messages, referral sessions and their on-site behaviour, assisted conversions, and cost per qualified enquiry. Follower count and engagement rate are easy to inflate and only loosely connected to revenue.

How much should a small business spend on social media marketing?

Survey data from The Manifest puts most small-business spending between roughly $500 and $5,000 per month, with around a quarter under $500. Below roughly $500 you are generally paying for scheduling and posting rather than strategy or production.

Is it better to hire an agency or keep social media in-house?

Hire an agency for production capacity and paid-media expertise. Keep it in-house when the job depends on understanding your customers, since that knowledge lives inside your business. Many teams do best with a hybrid — internal direction, external production.

How long before social media marketing shows results?

Expect several months before trends are readable, because the mechanism is cumulative familiarity rather than immediate response. Judge early progress by branded search volume and message quality rather than follower growth.

    The short version

Social media marketing works, but not as a sales channel and not through the metrics most reporting is built around. It builds the familiarity that makes every other channel convert better, distributes the content that earns links and citations, and tells you what your customers are actually confused about.

Pick two platforms where your customers already are. Post things worth reading. Measure branded search and qualified enquiries rather than likes. And treat the follower number as what it is — a number, leading, as Harvard’s researchers put it, to nothing in particular.
